Landscape Oil Painting

Workshop Instructor:

June 2020

Applications Open Soon

Application Deadline: February 1

This Spring, CIAR is holding its second season of the Landscape Oil Painting Workshop. This seven-day workshop is designed to merge studio skills and practices with the excitement of painting outdoors. The unique coastal terrain of Cuttyhunk Island is an ideal setting for exploring the patterns of nature through landscape painting. You will learn strategies  for designing strong compositions, color mixing using a limited palette on toned grounds, and how to effectively use brush strokes in fast direct painting. At each site, the class will focus on painting challenges ranging from land contours in coastal scenes to rendering texture. Painting sessions will begin with mini lectures and demonstrations, and a show-and-tell held at the end of the day. This workshop is open to oil painters of all levels.

In addition to group workshops each day, artists will have time to work on their own. We set up temporary work spaces on our large wraparound, covered porch overlooking Vineyard Sound. There will be time to wander, think, and sketch. The beautiful nature trails and quiet beaches offer a sense of escape from our busy lives. On Cuttyhunk, one can forget what day of the week it is, leave the house without keys, wallets, phones. In the evenings you will have time to enjoy unique island activities such as live musical performances, sunset golf cart cruises, stargazing, and bonfires on the beach.
